Review on ancient traditional art

                              —— Straw sandals

As historical culture heritage, straw sandals seem to be forgotten during the rapid development of science and technology in the twentieth century. When we look back to historical development, it is easy to find that the emergence and development of straw sandals condensed the brilliant wisdom of our working people at any time.

Straw sandals originated very early in China, I am afraid that the history of weaving straw sandals dates back to ancient times when animals skin are made for  clothes and leaves are made for skirt. It's original name is "Fei", it is said that it was created by Buze, vassal of the Yellow Emperor. Because it used grass for raw material, ordinary people can afford it. In ancient literature, there is a "Ge sandals" chapter in" Book of Songs • Wei Feng" says Ge sandals can protect oneself from frost. Ge is kind of hemp grass, and Ge sandals is actually straw sandals. In Han dynasty, straw sandals are called “no-borrow”. According to the explanation in << Wu Zong Zhi>>,it does no need to borrow straw sandals because everyone can afford it and use it . So it is called “no-borrow”.

In ancient times, it was very usual to wear straw sandals. According to historical records, As the emperor of Han dynasty, Liu Bei also liked to wear straw sandals to hold his court. Ancient knight and hermit seem to regard wearing straw sandals as fashion: Riding a horse with bamboo sticker and straw sandals and led his life under wind and rain. The emperor 's uncle Liu in the "Three Kingdoms" was the man who originally sold straw sandals. From the literature and straw sandals among Western Zhou Dynasty unearthed relics , as well as the picture of the pottery warrior in Han tomb which wears straw sandals, we can know that straw sandals appeared three thousand years ago during Shang Zhou dynasty.

From certain sense, straw sandals formed a kind of culture in <st1:country-region w:st="on">China's social life and the history of straw sandals is also the succession of Chinese nation's good tradition which reflects hard work and wisdom, showing the courage and struggle. With the social development, people's rising living standards become higher and higher, and now hand-made straw sandals are no longer mass consumer good and have become work of art.
